Title: FAR 2018/14 - Stock assessments of hoki, hake and ling using alternative catch histories.
FAR-2018-14-HOK-HAK-LIN-Alternative-Catch-Histories.pdf (6.9 MB)
This report presents additional assessments of hoki, hake and ling stocks using alternative catch histories. The assessments are for both hoki stocks (HOK 1 east, HOK 1 west), the three hake biological stocks (HAK 1 Sub-Antarctic, HAK 4 Chatham Rise, HAK 7 west coast South Island), and the three largest ling biological stocks (LIN 3&4 Chatham Rise, LIN 5&6 Sub-Antarctic, LIN 7 WCSI). Estimates of current stock status generally differed little from the base case model assessments.

Title: Fishery Characterisation and CPUE Analysis of LIN 1. New Zealand Fisheries Assessment Report 2017/48. 81 p.
FAR-2017-48-Fishery-characterisation-and-CPUE-LIN1.pdf (4.1 MB)
The fisheries taking ling in LIN 1 are described for 1989–90 to 2015–16, based on commercial catch and effort data. The most important fishery was the bottom longline fishery targeting ling, which took 42% of the 27 year catch total. Ling is also caught as a by-catch in a number of bottom trawl fisheries. Standardised catch per unit effort analyses were conducted on two bottom longline fisheries covering East Northland and the Bay of Plenty, but using different target species definitions.

Title: An investigation of otolith shape analysis as a tool to determine stock structure of ling (Genypterus blacodes).
FAR-2017-24-LIN-Otolith-Shape.pdf (1.1 MB)
Otolith shape analyses were found to usefully inform the stock structure of ling in New Zealand. Otoliths from Chatham Rise and Sub-Antarctic were correctly allocated to area with a success rate of 77.4%, a level indicative of a differentiation between ling from these two areas. For a north-south Sub-Antarctic comparison, a success rate of 50% strongly indicated no differentiation.

Title: FAR 2016/62 Fishery Characterisation and CPUE Analysis of LIN 1.
FAR-2016-62-LIN1-Characterisation-and-CPUE.pdf (5.2 MB)
The ling fisheries in LIN 1 are described for the period 1989–90 to 2011–12, based on commercial catch and effort data. The most important fishery was the ling target bottom longline fishery, which took 40% of the 23 year catch total. Ling is also caught as a by-catch in a number of bottom trawl fisheries. Standardised catch per unit effort analyses were conducted on three fisheries, with only the target ling bottom longline fishery accepted as an index of abundance.

Title: FAR 2016/05 Stock assessment of ling (Genypterus blacodes) in the Sub-Antarctic (LIN 5&6) for the 2014–15 fishing year
FAR-2016-05-LING56 Stock Assessment.pdf (1.5 MB)
An updated Bayesian assessment was presented for the LIN 5&6 (Sub-Antarctic) stock. A model fitted to proportion at-age and survey relative biomass series and using free trawl survey q’s was adopted as the base model. This estimated that B0 was 290 000 t and that B2014 was 86% of B0. The current stock size was estimated to be well above the management target of 40% B0, and is likely to increase slightly over the next 5 years at the most recent catch level or to decrease at the level of the TACC.

FAR-2015-82-Chatham-Ling-assessment.pdf (9.0 MB)
This reports presents an updated Bayesian assessment of ling (Genypterus blacodes) on the Chatham Rise (LIN 3&4) for the 2014-15 fishing year. The assessment incorporated all relevant biological, commercial fisheries, and survey data available. The current status of the stock is estimated to be 57% (95% C.I.: 45%, 71%) B0. This is unlikely to change under current catch rates, but may decline if catches increase to the TACC.

Title: FAR 2015/20 Trawl and acoustic survey of hoki and middle depth fish abundance on the west coast South Island, July–August 2013 (TAN1308).
FAR_2015_20_2804_HOK2010-04C.pdf (4.5 MB)
A combined trawl and acoustic survey of hoki, hake, ling, and associated species on the west coast South Island (WCSI) was carried out from 26 July to 23 August 2013. This was the tenth in a series of acoustic surveys of WCSI hoki spawning areas. The 2013 acoustic estimate was 13% lower than the equivalent index from 2012 and slightly below the long-term average of the time-series. The survey was also the third in a new time-series of trawl estimates for middle depth species from the WCSI.

Title: FAR 2015/03 Spatial and temporal changes in ling (Genypterus blacodes) population structure on the Chatham Rise and off West Coast South Island.
FAR_2015_03_2873_LIN.pdf (2.7 MB)
Characteristics of ling samples taken in the Chatham Rise longline fishery and west coast South Island trawl fishery were examined to determine what factors influenced changes in sex ratios in the data over time. The trends could not be comprehensively explained. However, much of the initial decline in the Chatham longline CPUE can probably be explained by a marked reduction in abundance of large fish in the early 1990s. The timing and location of ling spawning on Chatham Rise was defined.

Title: Stock assessment of ling (Genypterus blacodes) in Cook Strait and off the West Coast South Island (LIN 7), and a descriptive analysis of all ling fisheries, for the 2012–13 fishing year.
FAR_2013_63_2684_DEE2010-02LINB_Obj1_CS5_RR2B.pdf (3.2 MB)
Stock assessments are presented for ling in LIN 7CK (Cook Strait) and LIN 7WC (west coast South Island), for the 2012–13 fishing year. The current status of the LIN 7CK stock is unknown, and the assessment was considered unsuitable for providing management advice. The current status and estimate of absolute virgin biomass for the LIN 7WC stock is highly uncertain, but current stock size is estimated to be well above the management target of 40% B0.

FAR_2013_7_2355_LIN2009-01 Obj3, RR3_MID2007-01C Obj6.pdf (671.6 kb)
An assessment of the Cook Strait ling stock (LIN 7CK) is presented for the 2010–11 fishing year. A trawl CPUE series was the only available index of abundance believed to be reliable; there are no fishery-independent abundance indices for this stock. Biomass estimates are very uncertain. Current stock status as a percentage of B0 is estimated to be 54% B0 with a 95% confidence bound of 23–80% B0.

Title: Stock assessment of ling (Genypterus blacodes) on the Chatham Rise (LIN 3&4) and in the Sub-Antarctic (LIN 5&6) for the 2011–12 fishing year.
FAR_2013_6_2524_DEE2010-02LIN_NIW_Obj2, CS2A.pdf (1.2 MB)
Stock assessments are presented for ling in LIN 3&4 (Chatham Rise) and LIN 5&6 (Sub-Antarctic), for the 2011–12 fishing year. The current status of the LIN 3&4 stock is estimated to be about 55% B0, and about 89% B0 for LIN 5&6. Absolute biomass levels are uncertain for both stocks because there is little contrast in the principal abundance indices. Neither stock is likely to decline in the next five years if catches continue at recent levels.

Title: Fish and invertebrate bycatch and discards in ling longline fisheries, 1998–2006
AEBR_23.pdf (9.2 MB)
This report was prepared as an output from the MFish project ENV2006-01 "Bycatch and discards in ling longline fisheries" and addresses the following objective.
1. To estimate the quantity of non-target fish species caught, and the target and non-target fish species discarded, in the longline fisheries for ling for the fishing years 1998/1999 to 2005/06 using data from MFish Observers and commercial fishing returns.

In addition, estimates of non-target fish species catch and discards were also made for the 1994-95 fishing year in order to compare results using the current methodology with those of Anderson et al. (2000).

Title: Incidental capture of New Zealand fur seals (Arctocephalus forsteri) in longline fisheries in New Zealand waters, 1994–95 to 2005–06
AEBR_20.pdf (3.7 MB)
The specific objective for this work under Objective 1 of PR02006/04 is: to estimate and report the total numbers, releases and deaths of marine mammals where possible by species, fishery and fishing method, caught in commercial fisheries for the years 1990 to the end of the fishing year 2005106. After consultation with MFish at the start of the project, the time series was restricted to 1994-95 to 2005-06 and the requirement for reporting on fur seal captures in longline fisheries was to summarise the data and report mean catch rates, based on the ratio estimator, where possible for surface longlines and to summarise the capture data for bottom longlines. The report is based on captures of New Zealand fur seals reported by MFish observers during surface and bottom longline fisheries and includes animals landed on the deck, whether alive or dead.

Title: Factors that may influence the probability of fur seal capture in selected New Zealand fisheries
AEBR_19.pdf (7.2 MB)
This document describes the analysis carried out for addressing Specific Objective 2 of PR02006/05: to analyse factors affecting the probability of fur seal captures for the years 1990 to the end of the fishing year 2005106. In consultation with MFish, it was agreed that the analyses be restricted to the west coast South Island spawning hoki fishery (HWCSI) and the Stewart-Snares shelf multi-species trawl fisheries (STEW) for the 1994- 95 to 2005-06 fishing years; it was agreed that data for this period would better reflect current fishing practice.
